Mambo Marie, also known as Baron Samedi, is a complicated character who pretends to be a voodoo priestess called to Greendale to help the Church of Night. This during the battle against the pagan witches and other supernaturals of Phantasmagoria.

She however, decides to stay in town and even goes as far as to join the Order of Hecate. During her time there, she falls for Zelda Spellman and they begin a romantic relationship.

Appearance

Due to her duality, Mambo Marie doesn't always appear the same way. As the witch, whose full name is Mambo Michele Marie LeFleur, she has brown skin, brown eyes and black hair. Due to her Haitian heritage, she often dresses accordingly and wears karabele dresses and headwraps.

As Baron Samedi however, it becomes clear she's not actually a woman, but a man instead. He too, has brown skin, brown eyes and black hair. He has a skull painted on his face and dresses much more formal with a three piece suit, a top hat and wears beads around the neck.

Personality

As is expected of a voodoo priestess, Marie is wise, friendly and loves to help people. She strifes for unity amongst witchkind, instead of them fighting amongst one another due to different alignments, worships and beliefs. At the same time, she does hold some dislike towards the new age New Orleans voodoo and hoodoo magic due to her personal relation to the faith it originated from.

"We do not need to fight each other. That is what men do. But we are women, n'est-ce pas?"
— Mambo Marie

Relationships

Heeding Prudence's call for help to fight Phantasmagoria alongside the Church of Night, Mambo Marie establishes herself amongst the Greendale community rather quickly. That never stopped some of the darker aligned witches from being more reserved towards her however. One of those, being Zelda who didn't trust her at all due to her differing beliefs.

After some time, the voodoo priestess manages to proof she's an actual ally and is only there to help them by defeating the pagans. Things even go as far as her joining the newly established Order of Hecate and a budding romantic relationship follows. Of course, Mambo Marie can't keep her secret a secret much longer and comes clean about being Baron Samedi instead.

Alan Rickman in different roles

Which doesn't go down well and causes a rift between the two. Before returning to the Underworld, Baron Samedi resurrects Zelda's loyal familiar, Vinegar Tom and makes a promise. One to meet Zelda once again, when it is her time to cross over to the next life.

Abilities

Not only is Marie skilled as a voodoo priestess, she also appears to be capable of telling who possesses magical powers and who does not. Her tracking skills have proven her quite useful, especially while they were after Faustus Blackwood and can bring back the dead. Where exactly the limit of her (or Baron Samedi's) abilities lie, is not clear.
