Introduced as Professor Carcosa, owner of 'Professor Carcosa's Traveling Carnival and Phantasmagoria', Pan is perhaps a little better known as the leader of the group of pagans that hit Greendale with the intent of taking over.
Background
Pan, a Greek deity with ties to the wild, flocks, shepherds and rustic music, has been around and worshiped for an incredibly long time. One could definitely say he's as old as- if not older than, his first depictions and stories. He's known to be close to nymphs and while he possesses a human likeness, his legs are that of a goat and he has horns growing from his head.
While in ancient times associated with wooded glens, fields, groves, sex, fertility and spring, this ended up taking an abrupt turn when Christianity came into the picture. Ever since, he's often been linked up with demons or even the devil himself.
Appearance & Personality
For the most part, Pan's appearance in the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina aligns with what we'd imagine the deity to look like. The only difference being his face, which is a lot more animalistic in nature. While wearing his glamour and pretending to be Professor Carcosa, he has shoulder-length, black hair and wears gentleman's, rather dated, clothing.
As far as his personality goes, don't let his charming nature as the professor fool you. He is a once much revered deity that has gone off the deep end, to the point where he doesn't care who or what he harms to bring back the Old Gods. Not even stopping at murder and ritualistic sacrifices within his own tribe.
Abilities
Pan possesses several different abilities. Due to his status of deity, he has a certain longevity, that far surpasses that of witches. He's been around for thounsands, if not tens of thousands of years.
On top of that, he is capable of hiding his true appearance, using the same kind of glamour witches are able to cast. This allows him to blend in and not stand out amongst humans with very few capable of telling what he truly looks like. As a matter of fact, it appears only those with the Cunning are able to tell.
"You may have killed our Green Man, but I am the Great God Pan! And my gaze is madness incarnate, or had you forgotten?"
— Pan
Last but not least, Pan's infamous insanity gaze which is often referred to as 'madness personified'. It doesn't matter who or what he locks eyes with, they all end up going insane.
Fun Facts
- While based on the Greek god Pan, it is safe to say, this version is a lot more dark than its origin.
- The name, Professor Carcosa, comes from a short story written by Ambrose Bierce by the name of 'An inhabitant of Carcosa' or the 'King in Yellow' by Robert W. Chambers.
- More names appear to have been inspired by the two stories mentioned above. Brother Machen and Brother Bierce, for example.
- The Green Man, a god Pan tried to resurrect, is an often observed deity within many pantheons around the world but most often seen amongst the Celts.
