Satyrs are creatures with horse-like legs and ram horns. These rare creatures can use a disguise to look like a human, despite this not being the case.
On example of a satyr in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, is Professor Carcosa. He's also known as the deity Pan, who just so happens to be considered a satyr as well. He's the owner of Professor Carcosa's Traveling Carnival and Phantasmagoria, whose only objective it is to bring back the Green Man.
Satyrs in Mythology
In Greek mythology, where satyr originate from, these creatures are considered spirits related to nature. Therefore, they often times are depicted having the ears and tail of a horse. In some cases, these depictions also include horse-like legs, but more recent art doesn't include these anymore.
"Retreat, my brothers and sisters. Greendale is poisoned. We will go and start again!"
— Professor Carcosa/Pan
Satyr are considered to be rather ugly looking with mane-like hair, animal like features and appear to have a dislike of clothing. Yes, they always appear completely naked. No real surprise if we take into consideration how much they love music, dancing, women and wine. Their targets often being nymphs and mortal women.
Link to Nature
Not only do satyr look like they are part animal-- horse to be exact, their home is also found in nature. Most often, they can befound in woodlands, pastures amongst horses and mountains. As time passed however, they got depicted more and more goat-like and eventually, were considered to be the exact same as the Roman faun.
In The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
Thankfully, the CAOS show, returned the satyr more or less to its original form. Even though they decided to throw the deity Pan into the mix as well. A god who's known to be the ruler of the wild, flocks, shepherds and rustic music. Unlike the original satyr however, Pan is depicted as a more goat-like creature. Much like the faun.

This is where the satyr's ability the 'insanity gaze' originates from. Although Dionysus, the original Greek god linked to the satyr, is also known for a similar ability. Namely, insanity and ritualistic madness.
Abilities
Satyr in the CAOS show, possess a wide variety of abilities. However, only about three are shown in detail. These are the aforementioned insanity gaze, which causes insanity in both witches and mortals. Needless to say, it's not particularly effective in those that cannot see. Another would be their extended life, namely, longevity which allows them to live up to about several hundreds of years.
Lastly, their ability to hide their true appearance. Yes, satyr possess their very own type of magic that allows them to cast a glamour that cannot be seen through that easily. It hides their animalistic traits from the view of others and makes them appear human so they can safely travel the world.
Fun Facts
- They are the companions of the Greek god Dionysus.
- Satyr were thought to possess quite a bit of knowledge, but rarely wanted to give that knowledge up.
- Silenus is both a different name for satyr, as well as the name of the satyr who taught a young Dionysus.
- NOwadays, satyr are depicted rather tame. Back in the day, they definitely weren't PG/SFW.
