A werewolf is a humanoid creature who has a rather complicated relationship with the phases of the moon. In particular, the full moon and the days leading up to it. While some may embrace what they are, others aren't not that accepting of their canine half.

Regardless of how one may feel about it, under the influence of the impending full moon, a werewolf will start transforming at night. Whether they are in control of themselves after taking on the shape of a large wolf, depends on several factors. Experience and willpower being the main denominators.

Werewolves in Mythology

While observed almost all around the world, the werewolf is most prevalent in European folklore. They are often described as either humans who turn into wolves around the time of a full moon, or even human/wolf hybrids.

"She's my familiar. Her name is Amalia. She was given to me at birth. When my family died, she was the only real family I had left."
— Nicholas Scratch

These kinds of tales can be found all over Ancient Europe. From Mesopotamia, to Ancient Greece as well as countless of stories about wolf pelt wearing, shape-shifting giants in the Northern parts. At times, they are linked to punishment, but also to witchcraft. One thing is for certain however, human imagination and desire to descend their own limitations, goes back several tens of thousands of years.

In The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

The only real and up-close representation we see of a werewolf in CAOS, is that of Amalia. She was a werewolf who was gifted to Nicholas Scratch to be used as his familiar. Which isn't uncommon as not every single witch or warlock might want a goblin to do their bidding. Why settle for such a thing, if you can have a half human creature do your bidding? This sentiment is often observed in older and more traditional witch families.

The fact that this turned out to be a bad decision overall however, is evident in just how jealous Amalia becomes of all people in Nick's life after he started attending the Academy of Unseen Arts. So much so, she becomes a danger to those around him to the point an attempt to get her banished has been made. Eventually, it ends as one might expect: with her untimely death.

Abilities

Werewolves in the tv show, don't necessarily seem to possess the ability to shapeshift. Instead, they are constantly in a half wolf, half human state. They are large, wolf like and have sharp fangs, extended claws and glowing, yellow eyes.

If they have a complete human or complete wolf form, it is not shown nor explained. Therefore, it is not entirely certain if they have one, or what those might've looked like. We do know they are stronger, faster and have overall better senses than a human or witch would have.
