This dimension of the afterlife, is where the souls of the damned go when their lives have come to an end. It is also the home of the demons, creatures that have been appointed with punishing the damned.

While there are several places of access to be found all around the world, most of them seem to be centered in or near Greendale. Perhaps the best known, is the Devil's Doorway in the Greendale Mines. There's also a portal in the basement of the Church of Night building and a final one; the hellscape paintings at Dorian's Gray Room.

Satanic Witches vs. Christianity

According to the Satanic witches, Hell was created from the force of the fall of the archangel Lucifer Morningstar. Who then went on to reign over it, going by the name 'Dark Lord'. It is a place where the souls of mortals who committed minor or terrible crimes go, to be punished for their actions by demons.

"Our Dark Lord teaches us there is no law beyond do what thou wilt. Our Dark Lord asks, would you like to be happy, child, to be free? Free to love and to hate, to be what nature meant you to be, true to her laws and yourself only?"
— Faustus Blackwood

According to Christian beliefs however, Hell was created by God as a place to send the angels who refused to do his bidding. It is described as a place of punishment, everlasting destruction and to keep whoever goes there from ever reuniting with God all together. It's said to be a place of eternal torment, without a chance of redemption.

Those in Charge

At the very beginning of the show, ever since its formation, it was the Dark Lord who was in charge of Hell. His intent was to make Sabrina Spellman, his 'daughter', the Lady of Pandemonium, Maiden of Shadows and Queen of Hell, eventually. However, he is dethroned much sooner than expected and Sabrina has no interest in the throne. Instead, wanting to continue her life as it had been before.

Instead, Sabrina Morningstar, her alternate universe version, steps up and rules over Hell for a while. Unfortunately, this isn't something that is meant to last and eventually, Lilith steps in to take what she considered to have been rightfully hers to begin with. After all, she's been by the Dark Lord's side for a very, very long time. Without any real reward for her servitude.

Locations within Hell

Hell takes on various different shapes within both religion and stories. One of the perhaps better known descriptions of it, can be found in Dante's Inferno. Here, it is described as having nine different circles. Limbo, Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Wrath, Heresy, Violence, Fraud and Treachery.

The version of Hell used in the show is more loosely based on these cirles. For one, it has separated Limbo (Mortal Limbo) from Hell and made it its own place. There are also locations such as the Forest of Torment, Field of Witness, City of Pandemonium and Shores of Sorrow, that are located within these circles.
