A ritual with some controversial elements, the Feast of Feasts is an annual tradition celebrated by members of the Church of Night. One of the most surprising parts of this ritual is that human sacrifice is a key component.
Deadly Tradition
The High Priest or High Priestess of the Church of Night hosts this ritual, and a witch is chosen to not only die but be feasted upon by fellow coven members. The selection takes place in a type of lottery. Fourteen families must offer up a family member to be added to the lottery.
This selected Queen of the ceremony gives up their life, while another witch is picked to be the handmaiden for the Queen. This person must do anything and everything they are told to do. The tradition of sacrifice helps Church of Night coven members honor and remember the great witch Freya who gave up her own life in order to save her coven from starvation in Greendale's distant past.
Known Participants
In Sabrina Spellman's time, one notable instance of the Feast of Feasts featured Faustus Blackwood and Constance Blackwood as the hosts. The Queen of the Feast was Prudence Blackwood. This was the result of a spell cast by Lady Blackwood. Mildred slit her own throat to offer up her flesh so the ceremony could continue. Guests of this particular event included Zelda Spellman, Sabrina Spellman, Dorcas Night, Agatha Night, and Nicholas Scratch.
When Sabrina's family has to choose which members to offer up for the lottery during this feast, it comes down to Zelda to enter her name. Sabrina is against this and shows up unexpectedly to interrupt things as the lots are being drawn. She takes Zelda's place but does not get chosen as the queen. Prudence Blackwood is. Sabrina tries to force Father Blackwood to end the feast, but Mildred sacrifices herself instead, and the coven eats Mildred's flesh, allowing the ritual to continue.
"The Feast of Feasts is an annual demonstration of our devotion to the Dark Lord.”
— Zelda Spellma
Banning the Feast
For very understandable reasons, this morbid ritual was banned during the time that Edward Spellman was High Priest for the Church of Night. The cruel and unethical practice of sacrificing and eating a coven member was ended for the duration of his priesthood. However, once another leader took charge, the feasts were reinstituted, and the yearly tradition of murder began again.
While the ritual seems disturbing, there were reasons why coven members agreed to participate. It was said that the witch who was sacrificed as Queen had the honor of being transubstantiated, or transformed, when consumed by the coven and lived on in every member and even in the Dark Lord himself. It was considered to be a great honor. One with a rather large price, however.
