The Perverse was the 4th Eldritch Terror to arrive in Greendale. Although it had the power to grant wishes, reality was altered and warped whenever it did so. The Perverse took the form of a statue of an imp, and it acted in an impish way. Each granted wish came with a terrible catch.

Overview

Once a wish was made, people had no idea that reality was changed. They were even convinced that nothing had changed and everything was as it should be. Those who had been touched by previous Eldritch Terrors, however, were immune to the imp. For example, Rosalind and Sabrina remembered the correct version of reality, even after it had been altered.
 

The imp was stolen by Father Blackwood, and he used its powers to change reality into one where he was the leader of a dictatorship. In this altered world, witches were hunted. This only affected Greendale, though. Luckily, Sabrina was able to undo the imp's reality and help her friends get their memories back.

How it Started

A collector of artifacts, the Trinket Man arrived in Greendale and met with Father Blackwood. Out of all the items he had, Blackwood was most interested in a certain statue: the Imp of the Perverse. Even though the Trinket Man said it wasn't for sale, Father Blackwood refused to take no for an answer. He stole the item and used it to make himself  Greendale's dictator. 

"Could this be the Imp of the Perverse, one of my beloved eldritch terrors? It's said that the Imp bestows upon its owner any wish, the power to warp and pervert reality itself."

How it Ended

Father Blackwood ruled Greendale until Sabrina and Ambrose decided to take matters into their own hands and attempt to destroy the imp. Their theory was that once it was destroyed, Blackwood's wish of being a ruler would be reverted. Unfortunately, they only destroyed a replica. 

With the help of the Order of Hecate, Father Blackwood was trapped. Prudence finally revealed that the only way to undo one of the imp's wishes was to make another one. In a surprising turn of events, Father Blackwood's dog ended up being the real host of the Perverse. When Sabrina put her hand over the dog and wished for the world to go back to normal, it finally worked!
 

Sabrina planned to use the power of the Perverse to wish away the Void, another of the Eldritch Terrors, but at the last moment, the Trinket Man showed up to let her know that decision would have been unwise. He offers another option, giving her Pandora's Box in exchange for the Imp of the Perverse. 

Fun Facts

• Edgar Allan Poe wrote a short story called "The Imp of the Perverse."
• The word "imp" can mean a troublemaker or an evil spirit.
• "Perverse" can refer to something that is corrupted, much like the imp is able to corrupt reality.
• The Trinket Man refers to two elements from Greek myth: Cronus and Ophalas.
