If you've ever even remotely touched upon the Sabrina fandom or even the Archieverse, the names Zelda and Hilda Spellman are definitely familiar to you. Who wouldn't, when these two women hold such significance within the fandom and show up time and time again throughout all of the different forms of media.
Zelda and Hilda weren't the only children in this family of witches who resided within Greendale. As the fact that they are so lovingly called 'aunties' by none other than Sabrina herself suggests, there was at least one other child. Namely Sabrina's father, Edward Spellman, a brother to the two famous witches who would end up raising their niece after her parent's untimely death. In other adaptions besides Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, there's mentions made of two more Spellman siblings. Namely Vesta and Sophia but these aren't specifically mentioned in the show.
Perhaps the most famous Spellman witch after her late brother, Zelda has always played a huge part in Sabrina's life. Acting as a witness when the baby's name was signed in the book of the beast and thus, promising her to the Dark Lord. Out of all of her siblings however, it is important to note, she was always closest to her younger sister, Hilda. Although she might've perhaps had a bit of an odd way of showing her 'affection', which often time resulted in the younger sibling's death. Only to be buried in the family's Cain Pit kept in the cemetery in order to be resurrected.
This is something that had been going on between Zelda and Hilda for pretty much as long as they've been alive. Born in the fourteenth century, they attended the Academy of Unseen Arts around the same time, albeit a few years apart from one another. Back then, Zelda already greatly enjoyed making her much more good natured and rather gullible younger sister's life a living Hell.
While a generally sweet and empathic woman, which made her the perfect target for her older sister's abuse, Hilda greatly desires to even the score. Not surprising considering the atrocities that have been inflicted on her by Zelda, making her decades of studying at the Academy of Unseen Arts rather unpleasant. Regardless of this, she sticks by her sister her side through thick, thin and even death. Unlike Zelda however, she was there for her sister-in-law, Diana Spellman when she got Sabrina baptised at a Christian church. Which just shows how truly opposite of one another the Spellman sisters are.
While their relationship can only be descibed as difficult and complicated most of the time, it is undeniable that Zelda and Hilda are also rather fond of one another. They are siblings after all and in all aspects of their lives, compliment one another perfectly. Hilda being the motherly, friendly and kind woman she is and Zelda the much darker leaning one who's much more stern, disconnected and at times even arrogant. Despite this, both would do anything to protect their family and loved ones. Even going as far as to take in their cousin after he's been put on house arrest and saving a small baby girl from the clutches of a terrible father who would've much rather had another son.
Where Zelda is much more glamorous looking with her red hair, green eyes and old styled Hollywood outfits, Hilda is rather different. With blond hair, green eyes and a fashion style that hails straight from the sixties and seventees, she's one bundle of color compared to her older sister.
Running Spellman Mortuary together, Zelda is all about the business aspect while Hilda is often interacting with the clients, showing them more empathy. This isn't the only area in which they differ greatly. As we've already established, these two are all about opposites and even in their lives outside of the business they run together, this shows.
Hilda is greatly interested in brewing potions and possesses a tremendous amount of knowledge on the subject of herbs and plants. Zelda meanwhile, is much more involved in the witch community and therefore considered 'the better' Spellman. Not only does she take on the role of High Priestess after Blackwood's fall, she's also in charge of the Satanic Choir within the Academy of Unseen Arts.
While a lot can be said about these two women and how different they are, they are all about family, their niece and making sure that everyone in Greendale is well taken care of. Yes, despite her dislike of mortals, whenever they appear to be in danger, Zelda will easily step up and do what needs to be done and help Hilda out.
