Ambrose Spellman: The Clever Accomplice

When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. A saying that couldn't be more true if one were to look at Ambrose Spellman's time in the Mortal Realm. Not only does he have a relatively tragic past, his present also isn't the very best throughout the show. However, he never lets himself be held back by that, nor does he seem too upset about it. Instead, he makes the very best of things, taking it day-by-day and always remaining optimistic.

His Early Life

When we say Ambrose wasn't up to the best start in life, one would probably not go as far as to come to the conclusion he lost his parents at a relatively young age. Yet, this is very much the case, as he was primarily raised by Hilda Spellman after their tragic passing. With an interest in both art, poetry and stage magic, he was even taught by the great Houdini himself at one point. Eventually, he fell in with the wrong crowd and joined Aleister Crowley. Leading to an attempt to blow up the Vatican. Which needless to say, didn't succeed. Ambrose however, was the only witch who ended up getting arrested for the attempt. Due to his refusal to give up the names of the other people involved, he was sentenced to remain confined to the Spellman Mortuary via a binding spell. He has been working there as a mortician since.

The Peculiar Ambrose Spellman

We may now know of his tragic and unruly past, but does that mean we know what makes this still very young looking warlock tick? What we do know, is his loyalty and love for his family, his endless supply of sarcasm and jokes and the fact that he's quite the figure to come across. After all, if one doesn't have to leave the house, why bother dressing up properly. Right? Therefore, it should come as no surprise he's often seen going about his day barefoot, wearing just pants and a silk robe. Of course, when actually working in the mortuary, other precautions need to be taken to avoid coming into contact with bodily fluids. This may be the only moments he's dressed semi-properly.

Having made mistakes in the past, Ambrose has learned from those. Sure, he may still enjoy wreaking havoc in various ways, from hexing people to helping Sabrina when it comes to her daily woes, he knows better now and stays out of anything that can get him in real trouble. While he possesses an extensive knowledge on witch craft and the occult, his preferred field would be (and this should come as no surprise) necromancy.

The Binding Spell

During his time confined to the mortuary, Ambrose wasn't always all rainbows and sunshine. Which is understandable given the circumstances. Despite his somewhat depressive episodes however, he never once let this get the better of him. Nor did he ever want to give his family members any reason to worry about him. As a matter of fact, he was always more than ready to help Sabrina whenever this was needed. Whether it was to keep her on the right path, be her accomplice or keep her secrets.

In total, it takes about 75 years for Ambrose to finally be released from the binding that kept him in the Spellman Mortuary. As it was Faustus Blackwood who set him free, he ended up working for the guy and even made it to Top Boy. That was, until he realises that this isn't the way to go. Sadly, this doesn't happen until he's being framed by him, for the murder of the Anti-Pope. Swearing vengeance, he teams up with Prudence to hunt Faustus down.

Witchcraft and the Occult

As touched upon before, Ambrose is a rather skilled warlock who dabbles in multiple areas when it comes to magic and the occult. Due to this, he possesses a wide variety of abilities, despite not being anywhere near to the age the aunties who raised him have lived to see. Some examples are teleportation, telekinesis, warding, astral projection and weather control. However, his most defined trait is that he is in fact a well practiced necromancer and uses a wand to better channel his magical prowess. Outside of his magic related abilities, Ambrose greatly enjoys stage magic and sword fights as well as hand-to-hand combat.

His Romantic Endeavors

Known to be rather promiscuous, Ambrose Spellman is someone who does not seem to have a preference for men or women and in general, doesn't care for gender either way. During the show, he's seen having a short fling with none other than Prudence Blackwood during the absence of his original lover, Luke Chalfant. The latter he met during a funeral after which they started hooking up and eventually, started dating properly.
