Witches of Greendale: The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
From comics to a movie and a 90's tv show. Sabrina has been just about everywhere, on every platform and last but definitely not least, found a new home on the popular streaming platform Netflix. It's last format, a supernatural horror show is as close to the original comic books as it can get and thus, to date, the most accurate adaption. But what exactly is Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, also known as CAOS, all about? No worries, we'll tell you all about it in this article.
What is the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina?
As the name suggests, the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina tv show, is about none other than the teenage witch, Sabrina Spellman. After the death of her parents, she finds herself living with her aunts, Hilda and Zelda Spellman in the town of Greendale. As a half mortal, half witch, she's trying to balance both her magical education and a regular life. All while there's several dark forces out there that threaten not just Sabrina herself, but her family, friends as well as the entirety of the Mortal Realm.
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Riverdale
Both are based on popular comics by Archie Comics and take place in the same universe where Greendale and Riverdale are two neighboring towns separated from one another by the Sweetwater River. Like the original comics the tv show is based on, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina too, is a sister show to the popular Riverdale. It was, as a matter of fact, originally ordered by the CW and started development in 2017 as a companion series to Riverdale, but was moved to Netflix at the end of the year.
While there was originally no plans for an official cross over between the two after CAOS moving services, this would later change. Greendale gets mentioned in Riverdale, while Ben Button shows up in the first season of Sabrina. In the fourth season of Riverdale, Billy Marlin is added to the cast of the show, a character originally introduced in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Add onto that how the teenage witch ends up visiting Riverdale in Part Three of CAOS and Sabrina officially joining Riverdale in season six, it's clear plans changed.
An Instant Hit
Despite its initial struggles and move from the CW to Netflix, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was incredibly well received. The first part, was given a 91% and 7.7/10 rating by Rotten Tomatoes. Other sites and critics too, gave it similar ratings and comments such as 'it's most thrilling.' and 'off to a bewitchingly great start.' were often used.
The second part was almost equally well received, but got a slightly lower score due to the slower pace of the series throughout it. Followed with the third and fourth parts in similar fashion, while the story wrapped up nicely, it had to rely on Riverdale's sixth season to wrap up some loose ends.
The Pandemic and Cancellation.
While there were plans for a part five, the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina ended up getting cancelled in July of 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. CAOS may not continue on Netflix, but it is going to continue in its original form. A comic book series by the name of 'The Occult World of Sabrina' has since been announced to be released in 2022. It has since been delayed indefinitely without a given reason however.
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Comics
No worries! With the indefinite delay of the afore mentioned series, Sabrina's adventures aren't coming to an end. As it stands right now, the original series by the same name as the tv show, is still ongoing! With 8 issues out so far, divided into two volumes (or the Occult Edition which has all issues), there's plenty to read and much more to come.
