Whether it's the Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina or Riverdale, Sabrina Spellman herself is a force to be reckoned with no matter the setting. In the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina however, we see a far darker side of her than we've ever seen in the 90s sitcom. Yet, a lot of things are still the same. Let's see what she's all about in the latest (and perhaps best) adaption of her coming of age story, shall we?
We all know that Sabrina is different from her peers. Both when it comes to those at Baxter High and those at the Academy of Unseen Arts. This stems from the fact that she doesn't truly fully fit the mold of what has, for the longest time, been the norm within witch society. After all, she isn't a pure-blooded witch, due to her mother having been a mere mortal.
Due to her father's and aunties' standing within the Church of Night however, this has never really limited her. As a matter of fact, this only appeared to benefit her, as even before signing her name in the Book of the Beast, Sabrina Spellman is a force to be reckoned with. Unleashing what was then believed her full potential, upon committing herself to the Dark Lord, she showed incredible promise.
If experience taught the witch community anything, it is that half-witches are, generally, less powerful and talented than their pure-blooded counterparts. So what exactly made it so Sabrina is so vastly different?
We could absolutely argue there's very little research as a witch laying with a mortal was absolutely forbidden prior to Edward Spellman breaking this taboo. His overall less hostile stance towards mortals ends up bringing the death of both himself and his wife, Diana Spellman as their plane crashes on the way to Italy. Sabrina, who was with them, was teleported moments before the crash in an attempt to save her life. From that moment on, she's raised by Edward's sisters, Zelda and Hilda Spellman.
What Edward quite possibly didn't know however, was that his daughter, wasn't his. In an attempt to conceive, the couple asked the Dark Lord for help and that was exactly what he did. Resulting in a pregnancy and later on, a healthy baby girl by the name of Sabrina Spellman. Yes, our heroine turns out to be none other than Lucifer Morningstar's child. Making her part angel to boot.
While Sabrina appears as someone who is rather empowered, stubborn and with a strong sense of justice, we need to keep in mind she is still but a teenager when we first encounter her. Not just that, as there's an added layer on top of what people could argue would already be the most difficult years of one's life. Namely, having to come to terms with being half-witch and half-mortal. Leaving her to navigate both witch and mortal society.
Needless to say, this is quite the challenge, especially with the wide variety of obstacles that are being thrown her way. This is where her intelligence comes in quite handy, but her recklessness, balances things out more to the point where like her 90s counterpart, she finds herself in quite the mess sometimes.
As loyal as she is to her friends and family, she often times ends up dragging them down a very slippery slope with her. Endangering them time and time again, but equally, saving them from whatever darkness might attempt to use them to get to her this time around. At least she has her on-point humor to save her along the way as well as her growing magical powers and seemingly never-ending supply of stubbornness and willpower. Causing her to question witch customs and traditions every chance she gets.
The Spellman family isn't an unknown name within the witch community. As a matter of fact, almost all of them are outstanding members of their community. From Sabrina's father, Edwards Spellman who used to be the High Priest of the Church of Night as well as the Headmaster of the Academy of Unseen Arts, all the way to his sister Zelda, who ends up treading in his footsteps a little while after his passing. Even her cousin, Ambrose is pretty well known, though for vastly different reasons. Such as aiding a ploy to bring down the Vatican, for example.
Her friends on the other hand, are perhaps a little less known, from Roz and Theo (formerly known as Susie) with whom she ended up forming WICCA at their local high school, to an unlikely bond with none other than Prudence Blackwood, whom absolutely despised her when they first met at the Academy of Unseen Arts.
Her love life however, is something that definitely stands out as we see her grow and inevitably, change as time passes. At first, Sabrina is head over heels with her high school sweetheart, Harvey Kinkle. As her life changes however, she slowly comes to the realization that keeping secrets, wasn't exactly the way to maintain a healthy relationship. Leading her straight into the arms of the warlock, Nicholas Scratch who had been pursuing her for quite some time prior. Though one could say, this relationship too doesn't seem to have what it takes to last. Or does it?
Due to her dual nature, it should come as no surprise Sabrina Spellman also possesses quite the abilities other witches do not possess. Like how early after her baptism, she already shows us that she's capable of summoning Hellfire, something only very few witches have been capable of. Her powers however, only continued to grow as she ascends as the Herald of Hell. This granted her the ability to resurrect the dead without having to use a ritual, help from other witches or sacrifice. She also displayed the ability to kill angels, whose only weakness would've otherwise been the Spear of Longinus.
As if that wasn't enough, she's also able to bypass any enchantments when it comes to healing. Fixing not just Roz's eyesight, but heal her cousin's wounds as well. Manipulate memories, control weather and teleporting inanimate objects through not just space but time as well, are also added to the list. Oh and did we mention time travel? Yeah, it's safe to say, Sabrina is a force to be reckoned with, yet would willingly sacrifice herself to save her friends.
