Mambo Marie was a recurring character in The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and one of the fan favorites from the show. She was portrayed as being very mysterious, a woman of great faith and with a genuine and caring soul. She was also very attractive and wore clothes that paid homage to her culture.
However Mambo Marie was not who she said she was throughout the series and only much later on did we find out her true identity.
She was a beautiful Voodoo Priestess and Haitian Witch and her name was Marie LeFleur and was described as having brown glowing skin, brown hair and eyes and wearing clothes that pay homage to her culture. Not only was she described as being very attractive but she had a personality to match as she was said to be wise, friendly and helpful and had a great respect for the Haitian Voodoo Faith.
She does not believe that women and witches should be fighting each other and believed that everyone deserved the protection of a mèt-tèt. Marie did not think much of the New Orleans Voodoo Hoodoo magic and thinks of it as fake watered down magic.
When we first met Mambo Marie she was working in a small dark Voodoo shop when Ambrose and Prudence were trying to find Faustus Blackwood. Marie was able to tell straight away that Prudence was a witch with just a look which let us know that she is incredibly powerful.
She was able to use some form of magic using Prudence’s blood in order to give the two a locator spell to find Faustus.
Later on Prudence called Mambo Marie to Greendale in order to fight the pagans of Phantasmagoria and she helped to look after Zelda’s body and guide her back from limbo after she was shot by Mary Wardwell.
Mambo Marie helped to aid the witches of Greendale as they were invoking the Goddess Hecate to resurrect Hilda Spellman after she was killed by her sister when she became a humanoid spider.
During the Eldritch Terrors, the returned, Mambo Marie challenged Lazerus to a game of Senet to try and get him to take away the dead that had been in Greendale, if Lazerus wins then the dead are to remain. This is when her identity starts to come into question and we know she is not simply a Voodoo Priestess, she seems to know a great deal about the dead being returned and warns the Spellman’s that they are not what they seem and will not remember anything. Inevitably Mambo Marie loses the game but Lilith was able to kill Lazerus with the spear of longinus.
Mambo Marie finally reveals her identity and resurrects Vinegar Tom, Zelda’s familiar as a parting gift for her.
It was revealed after the returned that Mambo Marie was actually Baron Samedi who was the almighty father of the Gede Ioa who are the spirits of life and death.
The Baron was portrayed as having dark skin and a skull painted on his face who wore a three piece suit.
Unfortunately the Baron had to return to the underworld with the dead from the returned, but before he left he resurrected Vinegar Tom as a parting gift for Zelda with whom he had built a relationship with. He also left her a bell which she could ring if she should need him at any time and that he would be waiting when it was Zelda’s turn to cross over and guide her.
Mambo Marie and Zelda’s relationship did not get off to a good start, Zelda did not trust Marie as she was catholic and an outsider as Zelda was in the Church of night and had very strong beliefs back then. However, they started to develop a relationship of trust and then shared a kiss.
When Mambo Marie revealed that she was the Baron, Zelda was rather hurt and felt betrayed, but eventually she was able to set it aside, when her familiar was resurrected as a gift for her.
