Sabrina Spellman, Rosalind ‘Roz’ Walker, Harvey Kinkle, and Theo Putnam form a group dubbed as the ‘Fright Club’. Not to be mistaken for the garage band ‘The Fright Club’, composed of Harvey, Roz, Theo and Robin Goodfellow. Although we will passively mention the latter, the former is the main topic of discussion here! Bonding over being misfit outsiders of their human high school, and their hobby of analyzing horror films, these four sure got into a whole host of obstacles during their group’s formation.
But first, I should probably tell you about each member!
Assigned female at birth, Theo faced struggles with his gender identity, unable to freely express himself and thus facing bullying at the hands of the Baxter High Ravens—as in the football team. There weren’t actual transphobic birds around!
But, despite Sabrina and Roz’s best efforts, the principal wouldn’t do much, thus reducing what could be done. Appalled by the blatant lack of support, the girls took matters into their own hands and formed WICCA, or, Women's Intersectional Cultural and Creative Association. This was before Theo came out about his identity, however even once he did, the group still readily accepted him.
Fun fact! The WICCA members often went around calling themselves ‘teen witches’ during their campaigns, in honor of women who were harassed through time for their power and independent thinking. Ironic, considering….
The face of the show, everyone knows who Sabrina is! I don’t really think an introduction for her is really all that necessary. But, as a brief reminder; Sabrina Spellman is a half-witch, half-human. Although her identity tends to fluctuate throughout the show, Sabrina is ultimately considered a witch with magical abilities.
This very fact caused a massive rift within their Fright Team, causing her then-boyfriend, Harvey (yes, they were dating!) to break up with her. Doesn’t help either that Harvey and Roz started having a situation a bit after, along with the rest of the…situation with Harvey.
Such as causing his brother’s death in some fashion, bringing him back without thinking it through, then having Harvey commit homicide!
Coming from a long line of witch hunters, Harvey and Sabrina were destined to be at odds. He, however, loved her dearly once upon a time. That all changed when she came out as a witch—though, not for the reasons you may assume.
He knew, you see, before anyone else. However Sabrina erased his memories of the occasion, then repeatedly and continuously lied to him until it all mounted up against her. Didn’t help, though, when Sabrina iInadvertently caused the death of his beloved older brother, Tommy, then resurrected him.
Harvey, forced to kill his brother after this, is obviously traumatized and breaks up with Sabrina, barely wanting to stay friends with her at this point but does so regardless. Starting to fall for Roz at this point, it could’ve been sweet, if it hadn’t been such poor timing, especially with the oncoming powers of her own…
Oh, and throwing this out there; he’s also the lead singer and bassist of the Fright Club!
But, right, to Roz! As me mentioned prior, she and Sabrina formed WICCA in order to create a supportive environment for women within their school. She also dated Harvey, however her path was not a simple one.
Through a long-line of genetic blindness that strikes every female member of her family, Roz dedicated herself to her books before that sightless life could reach her. However, when Rox began experiencing flashes of memories that weren’t hers, or events that hadn’t been experienced yet, it was clear the blindness wasn’t all as mundane as it seemed to be.
Initially, Roz blamed Sabrina for it, as this was fresh off Sabrina’s revelation to Harvey, thus the district was heavily weighed against her. However, thanks to Theo reminding them of their friendship and mutual effort to discover the truth of Roz’s Seer abilities, they eventually reconverged and found friendship once more.
As I’ve mentioned before, this quad went through…quite a lot already. However, their adventures didn’t end with WICCA, Roz’s blindness, or Harvey’s brother’s second death.
It was actually the four of them that prevented the Dark Lord from returning! While Sabrina, her family and boyfriend Nick use their magic, Roz, Harvey and Theo went deep into the Greendale Mines to prevent the Gates of Hell from opening. They even managed to outwit and trick Lucifer into being trapped—and if that wasn’t impressive enough, the four kids also went down into the Underworld to save Nick to rescue him, facing all of their worst nightmares on the journey.
It was somewhere in that whole debacle, when they officially called themselves the ‘Fright Club’ for the first time. How endearing!
Oh, and, Harvey, Theo and Roz have started a garage band by covering rock songs after that! I wonder if they covered any of my favorite rock songs, although I could never say for certain. After all, between all of that, plus Sabrina (now the Queen of Hell) asking them to collect the souls of the damned, I’m not sure they could really spend so much time delving into stranger’s requests.
Surprise! That’s right, there is, in fact, a fifth member of this rag-tag group!
Some point after the whole Dark Lord situation, a pagan group that worships the Green Man comes into Greendale, under the guise of a traveling carnival called Phantasmagoria. Robin Goodfellow was amongst them, as hobgoblin that sought to fulfill the pagans’ intention of finding virgins to sacrifice in order to bring about their god.
Small issue. He sorta fell in love with his intended target, Theo.
Although struggling at first with the implications and inner turmoil, Robin, in the end, chooses Greendale and his new love, betraying the pagans. Harvey, won over by this brave act, offers an invite to join the Fright Club, something that Robin eagerly accepts in his new home.
