While a lot of previously covered actors have a strong bond to the Archieverse, there's very few-- if any besides this one, as Jonathan Whitesell. While you may primarily know him as our friendly neighborhood hobgoblin, Robin Goodfellow in the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, he also made an appearance in its sibling show, Riverdale. As a whole other character entirely!
Born on August 28, 1991 somewhere in Canada, Jonathan seemingly came out of nowhere when it came to his acting career. All that is known, is that he joined the military-- just like his father, after graduating high school. Deciding that while he liked acting, it wasn't really a career he could see support himself financially in the future.
This thought persisted for a while, until life hit him over the head. After a period of intense struggling, Whitesell decided to focus on what he truly wanted to do in life and joined an acting program at Capilano University. What followed after that, is history!
Jonathan's career really took off when he started appearing in bigger TV shows. It didn't matter the roles weren't main roles as he managed to impress regardless. Starring in the 100 as Bryan, boyfriend to Nathan Miller, it was his first time embracing an LGBTQ+ role in such a capacity.
Around the same time, Whitesell appeared in the fifth season of Once Upon a Time in the role of Hercules. Yes, that Hercules, but in a vastly different form than we would actually see in the Disney versions. Throughout 2016, he also starred in Beyond as Luke. This show was however, canceled after a mere two seasons.
In 2017, Jonathan Whitesell was cast for the role as Kurtz in the third season of Riverdale, thus joining the Archieverse family. No one could've anticipated however, that he'd return after his character met his untimely end. But in quite a different role at that and a brand new series set in the same universe at that!
Yes, in late 2019, the actor was cast as Robin Goodfellow in the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Joining the CAOS cast for part three. This time, his appearance wouldn't be limited to a mere four episodes. Instead, Robin made it all the way to the end of the show, with a whopping thirteen episodes that feature him.
More of his work has been released since the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina had to be canceled due to the pandemic. Such as his role in the drama films 'The Kill Team' and 'Bones of Crows' and an upcoming thriller movie which will be released in 2025 by the name of 'Valiant One'.
In his everyday life, outside of his acting gigs, Jonathan Whitesell is a very down to earth guy. Much like you and me he enjoys role play-- often in the form of the immensily popular Dungeons & Dragons, plays games such as Halo and Overwatch and has actually built his very own custom PC from scratch!
On top of that, he enjoys fantasy and science fiction movies and series. Game of Thrones and Star Wars in particular. He draws, paints and practices photography as well. Being an actor fits right up in there along with his other hobbies, doesn't it?
