While the life and death of this women were perhaps not all that complicated, it was what happened to it after that makes Mary Wardwell stand out as much as she did. Or rather, it's all due to who ends up taking on the persona of the woman who was once a teacher at Baxter High. But isn't there more than meets the eye? Let's dive into it, shall we?
There's not that much known about Mary when it comes to her life prior to her death. What we do know is that she was born to a couple who had her quite late in life. Always having had a love for stories, it was thought she'd end up as a librarian. To everyone's surprise, she chose to pursue teaching instead.
In order to do so, Mary had to leave Greendale behind, only returning to Greendale once her parents passed away. She struggled finding love and due to this, began digging into the history of town in search of stories long forgotten.
That is how she ended up knowing so much about Greendale's history, the witch trials and the hanging of the Greendale Thirteen in particular. She believes herself to be the record keeper. Wrongfully thinking that if she keeps everyone's stories safe, nothing bad will ever happen to them.
The Dark Lord would agree that Mary Wardwell's death was a necessary one. After all, he was the one who sent Lilith to Greendale to influence Sabrina Spellman. The high school teacher just so happened to offer a perfect chance of getting close to the teenage witch and thus, her place was fairly quickly taken-- much like her life.
Stepping in as Mary is of course, none other than Lilith. Turning the once compassionate and quirky teacher, into a cunning manipulator instead.
Using the late teacher's persona is one thing for Lilith. Leaving the woman as such, was clearly another as she does end up resurrecting Mary Wardwell after she seizes power in Hell. Taking over from the Dark Lord after switching sides and helping Sabrina Spellman instead. The same young witch Mary had always been rather fond of.
Despite having her memory erased, both of her time spent dead as well as the Spellman's being witches, Mary ends up joining Blackwood as a part of the Pimgrims of the Night Church. Even going as far as to help them get to Sabrina. Taking over from Blackwood once he's been bested, keeping the Church alive.
To those who are familiar with the comic books, the 'idea' of Mary Wardwell in CAOS may not be that strange. After all, while there was no actual Mary in the CAOS comics, Madam Satan, takes on a similar alias. Namely that of Evangeline Porter. A teacher at Baxter high.
In this case, she too does so to attempt to get close to Sabrina and get her revenge against the Spellman family. After all, it was because of Sabrina's mother, Diana Sawyer, that she lost the love of her life. Yes, Madam Satan was Iola, Edward Spellman's ex-girlfriend who he dumped in favor of Diana.
