Pandora’s Box: What’s in the box?

The introduction to the box, within the show, is pretty simple, actually. With four of the Eldritch Terrors captured by her coven, Sabrina Spellman looks to one of them to be able to stop the void. And thus, she chose to wish in the Imp of Perverse. As she was going to wish on it, the Trinket Man knocked on her door, told her it would be unwise and traded Pandora’s box for the Imp.

Talking to the Void

First, before he parts, he does warn Sabrina that she is going to have to open the box within The Void. And that the box, itself, very well, could suck her inside along with the void. When she is within the Void it asks her why she has willingly come. When she reveals why she is there, the Void informs her that many have tried before and failed. She proceeds to open the box, and it sucks part of the Void into it and her as well.

Trapping the Eldritch Terrors

Though, her family pulls her soul out and part of the void with her, when they put her soul into Sabrina Morningstar’s body. Sabrina intends to sacrifice herself to save her friends. Once the bloodletting begins, Ambrose, Nick and Harvey are able to go through the portal to save everyone there. They bring back Prudence, Mr. Kinkle, Roz and the Miners. When they are all free Nick then proceeds to trap, the Void, the Weird, the Uninvited, and the Darkness inside of Pandora’s box.

Pandora’s Box in Mythology

In mythology, we learn that the box was a gift from the Gods to Pandora for being the first woman on Earth. Though, it truly wasn’t a gift either, it was more a punishment that was due to her curiosity. When she opens the box, it allows all the evils of the world to be released. Despite it containing such things, it also contained Hope.

At the time of the story in mythology, though, Pandora’s box was actually an urn/clay pot. During translation, that part got mistranslated, and thus we now have Pandora’s box, has a bit more of a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? Imagine saying Pandora’s Urn… doesn’t seem to flow was well as Pandora’s Box does.

Well Balanced

Symbolically, the box represents what can happen if one is too curious, and that the desire for knowledge can be both a blessing and a curse. That it can have positive and negative effects within the world. The evils within the box can be seen as basically the challenges and difficulties that we face in life. Whereas the hope represents the opposite. Or more importantly, represents the optimism and resilience to overcome those challenges.
