Another Eldritch Terror plagues the town of Greendale with the Returned, one of the eight cosmic entities that bring different flavors of chaos and destruction. This one is able to resurrect the mortal and immortal dead, which, as you can imagine, doesn't go well. The dead aren't as they appear, and they don't remember everything. People soon learn that it's not a great idea to upset them.
Vinegar Tom is the first of the Returned to show up in town, and he heads over to the Spellman Mortuary. Even though his master, Zelda Spellman, welcomes him, voodoo priestess Mambo Marie warns that all is not what it seems. Lazarus, an avatar for the dead, soon faces off against Mambo Marie in a tense game of Senet. If you weren't aware, Senet is an ancient Egyptian board game of moving pawns around. Seems like the people of Greendale are always pawns in someone else's game, anyway. Metaphor, anyone?
What teen drama would be complete without a musical sequence? It just so happens that another of the Returned is the demonic rock band Satanic Panic, previously burned alive and itching to make their comeback tour. They are prepared to enact their revenge, which, of course, means a Battle of the Bands against the Fright Club. They even have Harvey's dad as leverage in this showdown at the Gates of Hell. Satanic Panic is ready to win and gain fame and fortune. Luckily, Sabrina and her band The Dark Mothers claim victory. I'm sure none of us saw that coming.
Next up, we have a delightful family reunion, the Returned style. Edward Spellman is back from the dead and just relaxing at his desk when Sabrina enters her Aunt Zelda's office. Since you're not supposed to remind the dead of their unfortunate demise, it probably isn't a great idea that Sabrina immediately informs him that she's his daughter and his wife Diana is also deceased. Edward retaliates by saying he isn't really her father, Lucifer is. Edward attacks Sabrina, but luckily Zelda steps in. Family drama, what can you do?
Meanwhile, Dorcas is another of the Returned to, well, return. She joins her sister Agatha for some bonding time braiding hair. It's all fun and games until she remembers that Agatha killed her. Oops. Luckily, Prudence takes the scissors away before this sister can return the favor.
The last of the Returned is Dr. Cerberus' mother, Elaine Kosgrove. Hilda finds her looking a little under the weather with flies all over her face. She wakes up suddenly and attacks her with a knife, accusing Hilda of being a witch. Dr. Cerberus treats his mother to some quiet time in the closet after that.
Did you forget about Mambo Marie and Lazarus? Well, Lilith is playing a game of her own and asks for her child to be returned to life. Unfortunately, this can't be done and Lazarus wins the game of Senet, too. This means the living and dead would forever suffer and feed the approaching Void. That doesn't sound good. You can always trust Lilith to have a backup plan. She promptly kills him with the Spear of Longinus. Mambo Marie leads the dead back to their grave and reveals herself to be Baron Samedi, a powerful Haitian spirit of death and rebirth. Plot twist!
Luckily, all that confusion over life and death is now resolved and the Returned are defeated. The Baron heads back to the underworld. However, Vinegar Tom is allowed to stay with Zelda. How nice for them. Bloodthirsty family members, dramatic board games, and life-or-death band battles. It's just another day in Greendale.
