Edward Spellman: A progressive High Priest
The Spellman family is the most important family in the Chilling adventures of Sabrina serie. The family has many family members, and one of them is Edward Spellman. The father of Sabrina, brother of Zelda and Hilda Spellman, the former High Priest of the Church of Night and the former Headmaster of the Academy of Unseen Arts.
Who is Edward Spellman?
Edward Spellman was a man with hazel brown eyes. In many pictures that we still have, can you also notice that he has a full grown beard and that he often wears a suit, with a tie and a top hat.
He was a very gifted and powerful warlock. Edward Spellman was a man who believed in the equality of witches/warlocks, mortals and all other beings. While he was the High Priest of the Church of Night, he tried to bring this belief into the coven. He wanted to allow inter-species marriages and wanted to turn the coven into a more tolerant one. He wasn't a fan of outdated and barbaric traditions that the coven had, and therefore banished some of them. For example the Feast of Feasts was banished during his time as High Priest.
A plane crash
Edward Spellman was married to Diana and had one daughter, Sabrina Spellman. When their daughter was still very young, he and his wife died in a plane crash. They were on their way to Italy, on Flight 2331. As soon as it happened Sabrina teleported to the two sisters of Edward Spellman and survived. But who was Edward before this terrible plane crash?
Edward grew up together with his two sisters, Hilda and Zelda. In the world of warlocks and witches you also have several other creatures, like demons. Edward was, during his youth, traumatized by one of the many demons we know, namely the sleep demon Batibat. Eventually he imprisoned the creature in the Acheron Configuration.
At a later age he became the High Priest of the Church of Night. During that time he met the mortal human Diana. He fell in love with her and wanted to marry her. In order to do that he made a deal with the Dark Lord. He could marry her, but he had to give his daughter to the Church of Night. He agreed with the deal and married the one he loved.
As soon as their daughter was born, Diana and Edward both had their own plans. Diana baptized her daughter in a Christian Church, namely the Holy Mother Church of Greendale. This while Edward Spellman signed the name of his daughter in the Book of the Beast. They both were unaware of their actions.
Edward Spellman as High Priest
Well we know already that Edward was a High Priest, but could he do as High Priest? He was known as an exceptionally powerful warlock. He, for example, even wrote an incantation to exorcise demons from mortals. He also created the Acheron Configuration, a thing to trap demons with. So he wasn’t only a powerful and strong warlock, but also a great High Priest for the Church of Night.
The Spellman family tree
Even when we do not know the names of the parents of Edward Spellman, we do know some names of other members of the Spellman family. So we do know that Edward has 4 ancestors, named Precilla, Francis, Evanora and Locasta Spellman. We also know his two sisters, wife, daughter (mentioned them before) and that he has a nephew named Ambrose Spellman. Edward Spellman, or by his full name Edward Theodore Spellman, didn’t have the most peaceful childhood, but he always had his family standing beside him.
