Worship of a deity can come in many shapes and forms. One of the most extreme we've seen in the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina however, would have to be that of the Feast of Feast. An annual ritual, that required a human sacrifice. But what is the history of this ritual and how does it all work exactly?
The fact that to anyone within the Church of Night, the Feast of Feasts was arguably the holiest of holy celebrations, is pretty clear from the get go. Especially as the first mention of it in the series is accompanied with that message. Not just that however. The Spellmans are invited to take part that year. Having been selected from the several families within the coven.
This ritualistic celebration serves as the celebration of the sacrifice of a witch by the name of Freya. Considered a queen amongst witches, she was the one that ended up saving thirteen of her sisters during the early days of the Church of Night. Selflessly sacrificing herself to help the others survive the harsh wintery conditions.
Now, every year, fourteen witch families are chosen and each of them select a witch to represent the intitial fourteen.
The fourteen that have been selected are not just obliged to attend the ritual, but they have to draw lots as well. These lots will determine which one of them will be the queen and have to undergo the same fate as Freya did all those centuries ago.
Out of the Spellman family, only two are deemed capable of representing the family. Zelda and Sabrina, as Hilda is excommunicated from the Church and Ambrose cannot take part due to not being a witch, but a warlock. Zelda takes it upon herself to be the representative, but Sabrina is violently against this.
Zelda chooses to ignore Sabrina's pleas to no be the family's representative for this year's Feast of Feasts. Her reasons for this the fact that both Hilda and her have been a part of this ritual several times already. None of these times did they end up being the queen and thus, the sacrifice.
This makes her believe this year too, she will not be picked as such. Sabrina however, has other plans and interrupts the drawing of the lots just as it is Zelda's turn. Ultimately taking her place. She doesn't end up being the queen, but Prudence Blackwood is.
It turns out that during the time where Edward Spellman was the High Priest of the Church of Night, the Feast of Feast had actually been banned. This due to its incredibly cruel and unethical nature. However, as soon as he passed and the position was passed onto Faustus Blackwood, it had been brought back.
There's claims the Church of Shadows too, held a similar ritual. However, taking the source's questionable backstory in consideration, it may all be something she came up with for her own benefit.
What are your thoughts on this brutal ritual? Should it be brought back and if so, in what form? Let us know down below!
